The term "de-ironed" means nothing other than that iron has been extracted from the mineral water and not, as is often erroneously assumed, that de-ironed water draws iron from the body.


The iron that is naturally contained in many mineral waters is removed by natural methods, for instance by aeration and separation through sand filters. The iron solidifies through contact with oxygen, gathering in the water in the shape of tiny reddish flakes, which is why it may be extracted from the mineral water (for aesthetic reasons) in keeping with the mineral and table water ordinance. The quality of the mineral water is not affected in any way.


Since May 24th 2004 the law no longer requires the term "de-ironed" to be on the label. This change in the law can be looked up in the current mineral and table water ordinance.
